For most of his long career, Johnny Frigo, who has died aged 90 in 2007, was an accomplished double-bassist who occasionally played violin. It took an appearance on the Johnny Carson television show in 1988 to confirm his decision to concentrate solely on the violin.
When Carson asked why it had taken so long to make the change, Frigo, then 71, replied that he had waited until: "I wouldn't have time to become a has-been."
